On this page the members of the VRL record and refine their goals for the current semester. This is a living document in which dhl will provide feedback. See the bottom of the page for links to past plans & goals documents.

Current Plans and Goals (Summer-Fall '11)

Brad

Projects

  • Support the ongoing VRL Group projects:
    • Jadrian's brain research.
    • Wenjin's Axon estimation project.
    • Radu's Protein project:
Assist Radu to integrate a test and any recent code.
  • Support collaborative projects.
    • Revised wrist registration.
  • Contribute to the design and development of the new cave. Integrate changes to vrg3d. Develop an API for new devices. Test and support vrg3d in the new cave.
  • Add to the public distribution of diffusion imaging data.


Infrastructure

  • Continue to write Wiki entries as needed.
  • Continue setting up third party software for students to use.
  • Extend the build system to make kits for public source and binary distributions.
  • Continue extend the make files to support new features such as additional third party packages.
  • Continue to integrate any new tests written by students into nightly test runs.

Fall Goals

  • Apply for jobs!
  • Make a good showing at VisWeek. Find some outside references for job search.
  • Submit a small IIS grant proposal.
  • Submit a CHI paper or note on CBDM data.
  • Publish a Vis Viewpoint on personality research.
  • Prepare publications for EuroVis and VisWeek.
  • Keep working on research ideas with Steve & Radu.
  • Contribute to CS295J. Get research and teaching ideas.



David

  1. get diffusion normals, one library, and one executable distributed (late...)

Jadrian

  • Objective: Finish the toy problem.
    • Key result: Quick-and-dirty solver produces output by 09/16.
      • Solver complete 10/13.
    • Key result: Necessary refinements to the solver are defined by 09/20.
      • Progress by end of semester, but not done.
    • Key result: Principled solver produces output by 10/07.
      • Not done.
  • Objective: Submit an abstract to ISMRM.
    • Key result: At least one topic is defined by 09/16.
      • Potential topic: tractography curve noise-sensitivity analysis
      • Topic defined on time.
    • Key result: Abstract is submitted by 11/9.
      • Abstract submitted on time.

Nathan

  • Independent research
    1. Develop platform for cooperative experiments using Mechanical Turk
      • (Mostly) done
    2. Obtain IRB approval

      4. Get approval!
    3. Using games from experimental economics (Prisoner's Dilemma, Trust Game, Ultimatum Game), attempt to replicate some of their findings
    4. Test the effect of the incentive level on people's behavior
    5. Test the effects various manifestations of online identity have on behavior
      • Attempt to replicate findings with faces increasing other-regarding behavior
      • Repeat experiment with avatars
      • Also names and nicknames
    6. Test effects of different interface elements
      • Colors, borders, overall "prettiness", ...
    7. Test effects of priming
  • Work with David, Win, and Ryan to provide metrics for brain area research
  • (Ongoing) Provide support and documentation for previously-written tools



Radu

  1. CHI paper submission (end June)

Wenjin

  • Complete Neuroimage paper on simulation results
  • Axon application on real data: human/pig/macaque
    • EPI implementation of double-PGSE on our scanner - work with Ed
    • IACUC - work with David on submission
    • IRB - work with David and Ed on submission
    • Iterate on Axonal Model for real data fitting
  • Submit real data results to ISMRM (Nov. 19th), then follow-up with journal submission
  • Start job search - CVs, statements, etc.

Steve

Updated 11/29 Fall

  • Work-in-progress
    • Plan for TVCG submission (or hold-off for Vis '12) by 12/31
      • Continue work on Diagrams project
    • CHI 4-pg Note submitted
    • InfoVis poster prepared
  • Build or get Testbed environment for parameterized visualization -- 9/30
    • Mentioned in Jian's grant, but I also want to use it for crowdsourcing experiments (e.g., Can we build a human-centered visualization "editing" framework that is the graphics equivalent of the Soylent paper from UIST '10?) -- Presented Scivis lunch about this topic...
