For our purposes, Eclipse is a cross-platform, open-source IDE written in Java. It has plug-ins to handle various languages, including Java, C/C++, and Python. It also understands various breeds of Makefiles.
Eclipse is maintained as a contributed project on our Linux filesystem, and the executable lives at /contrib/projects/eclipse/latest/eclipse. It runs equally well on Windows and Mac OSX, though you'll probably want to do a local install of the program when working on these platforms.
HOWTO load a project from CVS in Eclipse
- Window > Show View > Other... > CVS > CVS Repositories
- Right-click in repositories box, select New > Repository Location
