Our group meets weekly, generally on Tuesdays at lunchtime, to hear invited talks or to give talks to each other on the status of completed, ongoing, or upcoming research.

Rubric for SciVis Talks

Scivis talks as well as practices are evaluated according to the following rubric. A score of 4 is considered proficient.

Readiness (for practice talk, at least 48 hours in advance)

5: polished practice talk with very few minor changes suggested
4: complete talk ready and presented, effective visuals (or placeholders), some organizational issues
3: complete talk ready and presented, significant organizational issues
2: at least 75% of talk ready and presented, significant gaps and organizational issues
1: less than 75% of talk ready

Message Clarity

5: clear and compelling message with an intuitive organizational flow and in-depth explanation.
4: clear message with some organizational issues and sufficient explanation.
3: mostly clear message with significant organizational issues and sufficient explanation.
2: unclear message with serious organizational issues and insufficient explanation
1: unclear message with little attempt at organization or explanation.

Visuals

5: visuals strongly complement talk content and message and are incorporated smoothly into presentation
4: many visuals complement talk, but some are unclear or not verbally connected to the presentation
3: slides do not detract from presentation, but do not complement it well
2: slides are distracting or confusing in some places
1: slides are consistently distracting or confusing

Speech

5: verbal explanation relates to and extends the information from the visual slides in a focused and interactive way, does not rely too heavily on reading off the slides.
4: verbal explanation relates to and extends the information from the visual slides in a focused and interactive way, some reading from slides.
3: reads from slides with some extra explanation.
2: reads all information directly from slides, talk is confusing or unfocused in some places.
1: reads all information directly from slides, talk is consistently confusing or unfocused.

Appearance of Mastery

5: delivers the talk in a compelling and focused way, comfortable demeanor, encourages positive interaction with audience.
4: delivers a focused talk with positive audience interaction, comfortable demeanor.
3: delivers a mostly focused talk, interacts occasionally with audience, mostly comfortable demeanor.
2: talk is distracted in some places, interacts sparingly with audience, appears uncomfortable.
1: distracted talk, no audience interaction or rude audience interaction, appears uncomfortable and/or negative.
