CAVE
CAVE is a recursive acronym for "CAVE Automatic Virtual Environment". It is a display technology for virtual reality that uses shutter glasses and several projection screens surrounding the user to create a virtual world in which the user's body and other physical objects are also visible.
The CAVE at Brown, which we just call "The Cave", is a joint venture between the CS department and CCV, the Center for Computation and Visualization, which used to be part of the Division of Applied Math.
Several user applications designed by the VRL run in the Cave, including CavePainting. We also use the Cave for perceptual studies and other fundamental visualization research. Our CS137 class uses the Cave extensively to prototype visualization designs. Other users at the university have included the Cavewriting class, planetary geology classes and researchers, and even archeologists.
