Using Cavepainting, like all computer programs, is mostly a matter of getting familiar with it. This HOWTO is a reference for the tools available within the program.

The Menus
The menus are lined up in a jittered column in the front left portion of the Cave. They stay fixed in place relative to the physical space of the Cave regardless of how you move around or how you move the virtual world. Be careful if you walk past the menus; this means you're getting close to bumping your nose against the front wall!
