Sometimes even non-interactive programs, like diffusion data batch processing, can be very resource-intensive. We have a couple different options for big iron to throw at such tasks.

Fast Machines

Your workstation is a pretty sweet piece of hardware to begin with, but you might find you need an even better machine to farm out work. See the lists below for a few you could try.

Note that the "Athlon 64" processor is just a brand name; machines with these processors, like almost all others in the department, have 32-bit architectures.

Linux

You can log into these machines with ssh and run interactive or non-interactive jobs on them.

Note that sixg, while formerly a very powerful machine, is actually a fair bit slower now than most of these other hosts. It does have six gigs of memory, though, which can be nice.

Windows

If for some reason you're writing Windows programs, these machines, most of which live in the graphics lab, might be of use.

CS Department Compute Grid

The CS department runs a huge cluster of machines that are managed by the Sun Grid Engine. Eventually all the idle machines in the department will be added to the resource pool that the SGE can assign jobs to. Check out the tutorial on HOWTO run parallel jobs on the Sun Grid Engine.
