First, make sure that you're following the procedure to run CavePainting from the kiosk exactly. If that all checks out, then continue reading.

Tips and Tricks

If you have trouble navigating away from the browser page, try starting from the outside edge of the screen when swiping. If the swipe starts within the browser window it will only switch tabs and not move you to the desktop, as expected.

The most useful fix is to simply restart Cavepainting, as follows:

  • Navigate to the browser interface by swiping left to right, if it's not already shown
  • Quit Cavepainting by tapping the skull and crossbones (maybe a couple times) in the kiosk browser interface
  • Start your program as in run CavePainting from the kiosk

This should solve most problems, such as freezes or tracking issues.

You may also run into a problem where only the front wall updates or a freeze happens after saving a file. This is likely to be a crash of the VRG3D server on the kiosk. If this is the case, there will be a Windows error message window that needs to be closed, as follows:

  • Swipe left to right on the kiosk until you reach the desktop
  • Check for an error window
  • Close the window
  • Restart Cavepainting as described above

Please let us know if you encounter this bug, as we'd like to squash it!

Another common error comes from improperly formatted alpha masks. If an alpha mask uses a gray scale (usually a side effect from antialiasing in applications like Photoshop) cave painting will start, but nothing will be projected leading to a blank cave. To fix this restrict the alpha mask to only black and white.

Call for Help

If you can't fix the problem on your own, try asking someone else. If you're in CSCI1370, you can:

  1. email the professors and TA for general questions about assignments.
  2. email Ryan and email John for technical questions.
  3. call Ryan at (323) 697-3806 for emergency help.

If you're just a regular user or you're a CSCI1370 student who wants to work directly with the Cave administrators, you can:

  1. email the CCV helpdesk.
  2. email John
