Dinosaur Track Viewer

The dinosaur track viewer is a project made initially by [[User:Josh Tveite|Josh Tveite]] in collaboration with Dr. Stephen Gatesy and Morgan Turner to do 3D interactive visualization in the Yurt of their work studying the creation of dinosaur tracks.

The primary input to the program is a datafile containing a list of points on separate lines. Each line contains an integer for the ID of the point and then a series of xyz coordinates over time (all represented as standard text decimals, separated by spaces). There are also a number of optional inputs to show separate features, such as a list of triangles to show the surface, a list of particle IDs to show the pathlines of initially, and sets of particles that are in the same cluster. All of these input files can be specified in a config file fed to the program, of the form "Key=Value".

The process to generate all of these inputs from the raw data is specified at [[Dinosaur Track Viewer/Preprocess]].

A list of controls (which do change somewhat frequently) is available at [[Dinosaur Track Viewer/Controls]].

David's checklist for research papers (in the order he'll be checking your draft for them):

#the paper has the following ingredients (typically as sections)
##abstract
##introduction
##related work
##methods
##results
##discussion
##conclusions
#the title is specific. It does not describe a problem area or a class of solutions (unless the class is completely represented in the paper). It captures the contributions.
#the abstract begins with the contributions. Typically, this means the paper starts, "we present...," or "this paper presents...".
#the abstract summarizes the conclusions (see point below about conclusions)
#the results demonstrate the contributions. If you results do not demonstrate your contributions, then remove them. If nothing demonstrates your contributions, then your paper is probably not ready to submit. [[Statistics And Graphs|If your results involve statistics, this link may be helpful.]]
#the paper ends with conclusions. If there are no conclusions, why should anyone read the paper? Conclusions are not just a summary. From this work, what should readers conclude, or what do you conclude? Often the conclusions summarize and emphasize the most important elements in the results and discussion sections.
#there is no "future work." Readers do not really care what you plan to do in the future. If there are interesting open problems to describe, label them as such in the discussion or somewhere else.
#the related work section is not a literature review. A related work section should explain how this work is different from other work. It is not necessary to detail all of the other work, only to describe it enough to explain the relationship to your work. Of course, if you're writing a review article, then this point does not apply.
#the methods section gives only enough detail to reproduce the results. It is not a narrative of how you spent your last N months. It is also not the place to discuss design decisions or funny results. It should very concisely outlined the steps someone else would need to take to reproduce these results.
#the introduction should briefly describe the problem and its significance. It may also include related work as a subsection.

What is a contribution? It is something that expands human knowledge. Examples include:
#a new and more useful algorithm, for which the results will demonstrate the novelty and the "more useful"ness. The "more useful" part must be with respect to the best available.
#experimental results comparing computational approaches, visualization approaches, display environments, interaction algorithms, etc.. The results are the comparisons and your analysis of those comparisons.

I worked as a visiting RPI undergraduate on $G maintenance and CAVE applications from the summer of 2012 to the summer of 2014. I worked on my Master's degree at Brown from then until May 2016.

Legacy info

My summer 2012 project was to get [[CavePainting]] building again on CS and CCV systems, which required work with [[MMotion]], [[Kuchora]], [[VRG3D]], and [[VRPN]]. The resulting instructions can be found at [[Building CavePainting]]; however, as of May 2016, they are out-of-date.

From then until becoming a Master's student, I worked mostly on $G maintenance and nightly build tests. Information about these systems can be found at [[Automatic Build System]] and [[Software tests]]. I did not implement the test systems, but I fixed many projects which were failing nightly build and/or run tests, including [[CavePainting]]. I also worked on other applications for the CAVE and YURT in this time, including [[Building ParaView]], [[Integrating Scalable with ParaView]], and [[ADVISER]].

My work on making the Vrui toolkit (http://keckcaves.org/software/vrui) compatible with the CAVE and YURT as well as our research applications, MeshViewer and 3DVisualizer, can be found at https://github.com/jonovotny/VruiScalable. As of May 2016, it is managed by [[User:Johannes Novotny|Johannes Novotny]].

I also, along with [[User:Johannes Novotny|Johannes Novotny]] and [[User:Josh Tveite|Josh Tveite]] as well as [[User:David Laidlaw|David]] and collaborators from Virginia Tech, worked on running a user study, which required the use of Vrui and MeshViewer, and writing "Effects of Display Fidelity and Platform on Analysis Performance with Biological Datasets in Virtual Reality" to submit to Vis 2016.

Data from my Master's project, ''Virtually Visualizing Vessels: A Study of the Annotation of Placental Vasculature from MRI in Large-scale Virtual Reality for Surgical Planning'', is in a private repository also under the management of [[User:Johannes Novotny|Johannes Novotny]]. The project required the use of Vrui and 3DVisualizer. As of May 2016, the thesis has been submitted to the department, and it will be listed on http://cs.brown.edu/research/pubs/theses/masters/; we are also preparing to submit it to TVCG.
